'Unsafe' Extension Cord Behind Malden Fire That Hospitalized 2 Firefighters

Malden Fire responded to the fire at 24-26 John Street around 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 26, Malden Fire Chief William P. Sullivan and State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey report. 

Upon arrival, crews found heavy fire coming from the two-story family home up through the attic. The fire was concentrated on the upper floors, where the two injured firefighters were battling the blaze, officials said.

“This fire started with an indoor extension cord that was run through a window along the outside of the home, where it ignited the building’s exterior," Chief Sullivan said. 

While crews were attacking the blaze, two unconfirmed explosions were heard before trapping two firefighters inside, according to NECN. A third alarm was eventually called. However, Chief Sullivan did not confirm the firefighters being trapped inside the burning building nor the explosions.

"I have no confirmation or anything like that, in first that's the first I'm hearing of that," he told the outlet.

The fire was knocked around 10 p.m, the outlet said. The two firefighters were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. 

No other injuries were reported. The American Red Cross was helping those displaced by the fire.
