Springer retires from EMA post after 22 years
JOHNSTOWN - Ron Springer, the executive director of the Cambria County Department of Emergency Services, retired Friday.
Cambria County solicitor William Barbin confirmed the retirement late Friday afternoon but when asked to elaborate, would say nothing more.
Cambria County President Commissioner Tom Chernisky also confirmed Springer’s retirement and added, “We thank him for his service to the county and we wish him well.”
Cambria County Commissioner Mark Wissinger said Springer has been with the county for more than 20 years, but had nothing further to add, saying, “It’s a personnel matter.”
The now former EMA director also serves as the leader of the Cambria County Hazardous Materials Response Team and the president of the Dauntless Fire Company in Ebensburg.
Springer’s retirement is sudden, but he told 6 News on the phone that he made the decision to retire on Friday after meeting with the county commissioners. He said it’s something he has kicked around for the last year or so and after some health issues in recent years decided the stress of the job is too much.
Springer insisted there haven’t been any problems but said he finally decided that was it, adding that he didn’t want to tell anyone in advance because he was getting cold feet.
Springer has worked for the county for 22 years and told 6 News he plans to continue his position as president of the Dauntless Fire Company in Ebensburg. He also said he hopes to continue to help the county and volunteer with the hazmat team.
In the meantime, Chernisky said Al Kline will serve as acting EMA director until the county hires someone full time.
