Rye's Resurrection School Celebrates New Doty Gym
Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, praised the Doty family, which contributed more than $1 million to build the new gym for the school. He also paid tribute to George and Marie Doty, who were residents of Rye from 1956 until their deaths in 2008 and 2012, respectively. Their five children all attended Resurrection Middle School, and the couple also made large contributions to the restoration of the Great Dome of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, as well as to Fordham University.
"I knew them a long time before I became archbishop of New York, because every priest and every bishop in the world knew George and Marie Doty," Dolan said. "The Doty family name is synonymous with Catholic values, synonymous with Catholic ideals, synonymous with generosity."
The gym will be used for classes, as well as for the Resurrection CYO basketball program, which is one of the largest in the state, with more than 650 children participating on 60 teams. The Resurrection Eig hth-Grade Boys A Team recently won the 2013-14 Westchester/Putnam Championship.
Bill Doty also praised his parents, and said that the blessing of the gym was one of the happiest days of his life.
"They were truly unique and generous individuals who called Resurrection their home parish for over 55 years. They loved Resurrection and it was the center of their and our lives. The vast majority of significant and memorable events in our lives occurred on this campus."
A declaration from County Executive Rob Astorino was also read, proclaiming the day "Doty Family Recognition Day" in Westchester. Dolan then presented the championship trophy to the eighth-grade team, consisting of Coach Martin Durkin and team members Jack Cacase, Harrison Caponiti, Joseph Colaio-Coppola, Matthew Cooper, Jack Doty, Jake Heffernan, Gavin Kenny, Van Schwarz, William Tepedino and Andrew J. Thompson.
Bill Doty congratulated the players, and remarked on how respected the program is.
"Anyone in the game knows when you are the CYO champion, you are something special."
