Logan Township police use body-cams

LOGAN TOWNSHIP -- Logan Township police officers started to use their new body cameras on Monday after a week of testing.

The department has had dash-cams inside the cars for about a year, and Chief Tim Mercer said officers have gotten used to using those properly and are now ready for the body-cam addition.

The dash cams and body cams are synced, so both capture every minute -- when the officer is near the car and when he or she is away from the car.

Mercer said the body cams were a $90,000 township investment.

Officers trained with the cameras last week, and fully began to use them on the job Monday.

Mercer said the cameras provide solid evidence for every situation from the moment an officer comes in contact with a suspect.

"There is no more he said, she said," he said.

Mercer said the cameras will strengthen officers' testimonies in court by allowing the officer to show, rather than only tell.

He said the cameras, and the evidence they provide, not only benefit law enforcement, but everyone involved.

"The cameras don't lie. Videos are very cold, very unbiased. It just captures the facts," he said.
