Director Leon Vance’s personal life will be front and center in the 1000th episode of NCIS. Who is Jared Vance on NCIS? Here’s everything to know about Vance’s estranged son, including why the character was recast.
NCIS is CBS’s decades-long police procedural that focuses on the personal and professional lives of special agents in the Naval Criminal Investigation Service’s Major Case Response Team, which investigates criminal activity involving the United States Navy, Marine Corps and their families. The series premiered in 2003 and it is the third-longest-running U.S. primetime drama series behind Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order. Its success has spawned several different spin-offs, including the 14-season hit NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: Hawai’i and NCIS: Sydney, among others.
Special Agent Leon Vance (played by Rocky Carroll) was first introduced during Season 5 as a temporary NCIS Director in Internal Affairs. He was made the permanent director the following season and has remained a fixture on the show ever since. In Season 10, his wife Jackie (Paula Newsome) was tragically killed in a shooting. Vance’s son, whom he welcomed with Jackie, hasn’t been seen since Season 11, but that’s going to change when Jared pays his dad a visit in Season 21’s “A Thousand Yards.” Jared will also be sporting an all-new look, as the character has been recast entirely. Scroll on for everything there is to know about Vance’s son Jared.
Who is Jared Vance on NCIS?
Who is Jared Vance on NCIS? Jared Vance is the only son of Jackie and Leon Vance, as well as the younger brother of Kayla Vance. Along with his sister, Jared was also a recipient of The Leroy Jethro Gibbs Scholarship Fund, as scholarship created by Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) in memory of his late daughter Kelly Gibbs.
Jared was originally played by Khamani Griffin in Season 6 and then by Akinsola Aribo in seasons 9-11. Now, Jared will be played by actor Spence Moore II, who is best known for his roles in All American, Superman & Lois and Creed III. Although the showrunners have not shared why the role was recast, it was likely due to Jared’s age and the fact that he’s all grown up. Additionally, Aribo has not done much acting since his last appearance on NCIS back in 2013. Moore, on the other hand, has kept very busy since he entered into the industry in 2016. His credits also include the shows Criminal Minds, 13 Reasons Why, S.W.A.T. and Grown-ish, among others.
Vance has a strained relationship with his son, and the upcoming Season 21 episode will force him to face that head-on. The episode’s synopsis reads: “Vance tries to mend fences with his estranged son by explaining why, despite the ongoing dangers of his job, he still chooses to stay at NCIS.” Elsewhere in the episode, the rest of the team “comes under attack by a mysterious enemy from the past.”
Brian Dietzen, who stars as Jimmy Palmer, previewed what fans can expect from the episode during an interview Parade. “Through [Jared]’s eyes and through his questions we get to really ask the questions: Why is NCIS important? Why do we spend all this time with NCIS?” he told the outlet. “He’s asking his father this. I think viewers are going to come away with a lot of cool answers to that and why this thing that we’re doing is important. I just can’t say enough good things about the script and I can’t spoil it beyond that.”
The milestone 1000th episode will be checking back in with a few other characters as well, including Joe Spano’s lovable Tobias “T.C.” Fornell and NCIS: Los Angeles‘ Kensi Byle (played by Daniela Ruah).
