Jack Marcus, 97, Leader Of Danbury-Based Marcus Dairy
Marcus was born on Oct. 24, 1916, at home on Skiff Mountain in Sharon, the eighth child of nine to Harry and Anna Sweet Marcus.
He and his family settled in Ridgebury, the original home of Marcus Dairy, in 1919. He worked on the family farm, delivered milk with his brother, Kal, and attended Miry Brook School, Main Street School and the old Danbury High School. In 1947, he built Marcus Dairy on Sugar Hollow Road. The following year, he and his wife, Pearl, opened the iconic Dairy Bar that operated for 66 years, a popular gathering place for celebrations, concerts, graduations, first dates and motorcyclists on Sunday mornings.
Marcus was active in the Danbury community. He was a member of the Danbury Hospital Development Fund since its inception in 1957. He was the longest active member of the Danbury Exchange Club and one of the original founders of the Jewish Home for the Elderly in Fairfield.
He was recognized as president emeritus for his longtime service to the United Jewish Center and a trustee emeritus of the Danbury Hospital Development Fund, now the Western Connecticut Health Network Foundation. He was a member of the Miry Brook Fire Department and a supporter of the Wooster School, where his children, grandchildren and now a great-grandchild attends.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl; daughter, Susan Garber Brown (Edward) of Unionville, Pa.; sons, Michael (Nancy) of Danbury, Neil (Lisi) of Redding and Jeffrey (Annette) of Brookfield; and 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. His son, Alan; seven sisters and one brother predeceased him.
Funeral services were held at the United Jewish Center. Interment was in the United Jewish Center Cemetery, Gray’s Bridge Road, Brookfield.
