'A once in a lifetime kid:' West Branch senior breaks school wrestling record

A local wrestler secured his spot in his school's record books with the most wins in program history.

Tuesday night was a cause for celebration at West Branch as Landon Bainey etched his name into school history with 144 wins.

"Landon is a once in a lifetime kid to coach."

Landon Bainey now sits at the top of West Branch wrestling history as the senior broke the record in his very last home dual, capping his dual meet career at 73-0.

The gym was packed with family, friends and fans for Bainey's record breaking moment, but one of those family members played a special role, his dad, who coached him through all 144 wins.

"To finish off his last match as a senior and get a 73rd win in dual meets, it was just really exciting and Landon’s always someone we expect to go out there and take care of business and win or lose, he's going to give us 100% every time. And that's something I take great pride in knowing that he's given us 110% every time."

His dad Jason Bainey coached Buzzy Maines, the former record holder, and he says that when Landon was younger, not only did he look up to Buzzy, but he was aiming for that record.

"I always looked up to him all my life and he got the record in his senior year state finals. I was like that's the goal to get, to beat the school record."

Bainey, who will wrestle at Edinboro next season, says it's a special feeling to have his dad as his head coach.

"Everybody says that 'I’m really close to my coach and my dad is my biggest supporter,' but put them both together; my dad and my coach, they are the same person. It's awesome. He's coached me since my first match of course and coached me my last match of my high school career."

Bainey won by first period fall, but Tyrone would go on to get the team win, beating the Warriors thirty-six to thirty-three.

Bainey's first period pin meant he reached 90 career falls putting the cherry on top of his last career meet for the Warriors.
